More than 300 piles of cremated human remains have been found scattered across the Nevada desert.
The cryptic find was discovered when a man who stumbled across the shocking scene near the remote town of Searchlight, about an hour outside of Las Vegas, on July 28.
A recovery team from Palm Mortuaries and Cemeteries arrived at the scene on Wednesday to remove the piles.
They found about 315 sets of ashes and placed them each in individual urns.
The decision to remove the piles comes after the Bureau of Land Management launched an initial investigation which confirmed in August that the mounds were human, 8 News Now reported.
However, no traceable information could be salvaged from the ‘cremains’ – a term an official at the Bureau of Land Management used to refer to the piles.
Authorities believe a funeral home littered the desert with the ashes, but have not released details of any businesses suspected of being involved.
While spreading human remains is permitted on public land in Nevada, mass commercial dumping by funeral homes is illegal under state law.
Businesses are required to ‘preserve’ the dignity of remains which have been entrusted to them.

‘I think it’s important to us to make sure that these people are not forgotten and not left,’ Celena DiLullo, president of Palm Mortuaries and Cemeteries, said.
The hundreds of remains will be placed into a crypt at one of the Palm cemeteries, so they can be found by any loved ones searching for them, said Dilullo.
‘I don’t know if it was the wishes of these people to be out, so that’s kind of what goes through my mind. If this is not how they would want to be remembered, we would just want to have a place for them to be,’ she added.
The piles no longer have any identifiable information within them, which could make it near impossible for families to distinguish if their loved ones’ remains have been caught up in the situation.
DiLullo noted that it’s important to her community and profession to show that they genuinely care about the remains found.
Several sources claimed to the outlet that a recently closed funeral home was responsible for the discarded ashes.

However, a representative from the undisclosed business has repeatedly denied any involvement.
When the piles were originally discovered, officials initially believed there were about 70 piles, but another plot of mounds was later found.
Another terrifying case involving hundreds of dead occurred in Juarez, Mexico, when nearly 400 bodies were discovered at a suspected secret crematorium.
