According to police reports, the couple was notified by First National Bank on Monday that several checks had been cashed from their account, totaling $32,901.

Reports state the couple was not aware of the checks said to be written out to pay utilities and charities.

After further investigation, reports state the checks were written to completely different people and for different amounts than originally intended. This is called check washing.

The bank told the couple all but $5,510 will be refunded to their account, but there is a chance that amount could be refunded, too.

The incident comes days after a Boardman man was scammed out of $20,000. The man told police that he had given $20,000 to an unknown man after receiving an email he thought was from PayPal, directing him that he needed to pay $981 and to call a phone number if he had questions.

A similar incident happened in Trumbull County last week. according to a release from the sheriff’s office, the woman reported on Friday that she was out of $23,000 in cash after receiving an email disguised as a message from PayPal, saying she owed $300.
