Trump Exempts Many Electronics From New Tariffs

The Trump administration published a rule late Friday night that appears to exempt many electronic parts and devices, including smartphones and computers, from at least some of the president’s punishing tariffs on China.

A message posted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection includes a long list of products that will not face the reciprocal tariffs President Trump imposed in recent days on Chinese goods as part of a worsening trade war that has rattled markets.

The tariffs were expected to take a big toll on tech companies like Apple, which makes iPhones and many other products in China.

The list of products that will be exempted includes smartphones, “automatic data processing machines,” flat-panel displays, transistors and semiconductors.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
