I/O 2025: Google Meet gets live speech translation for video calls. Here’s how it works

Google has provided another AI powered upgrade to Google Meet at the I/O 2025 developer conference on Monday. The new upgrade converts the spoken words of the speaker in a meeting into the listner’s preferred language in real-time while preserving the tone, voice and expression. 

In a demo video showcased by Google, two friends can be seen talking in English and Spanish respectively and with real-time speech translation turned on, the AI generated audio is leveraged to convey the translated text while keeping the natural pauses and tone of the conversation.

However, the new real-time translation feature will only be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra users starting with English and Spanish but threre are plans to add support for Italian, Germkan and Portugese in the coming weeks. Google says it plans to futher develop this feature for businesses and early testing for Workplace customers will begin this year. 

Gmail to get more personalised with Gemini:

Meanwhile, Google is also planning to leverage even more capabilities of Gemini to provide a personalised experience in Gmail by drafting smart replies. Google plans to leverage the personal data of users in order to help them provide specific suggestions that are more relevant and on point. 

Much like the Google Meet feature, Google says Gmail’s Smart Replies adapts to the tone of user in order to provide responses that emulate their writitng style. 

Gemini will also be leveraged to help users organize their emails by archiving or deleting certain emails. The AI assitant is also being leveraged to help scheduling meeting or appointments easier by having Gemini go through multiple round of emails in order to finalize a suitable time. The new Gmail features will be available ‘later this year’, but it isn’t yet clear if they will be restricted to paying users or passed down to the free tier.
