Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness observed catastrophic damage in St Elizabeth Parish on October 29, wrought by Hurricane Melissa the previous day. Aerial footage posted on social media by Holness gives a sweeping view of Black River, which was heavily damaged. Other clips show the prime minister interacting with and consoling some people affected by the vast destruction. “The damage is great, but we are going to devote all our energy to mount a strong recovery,” he said in the post. Though a lingering tropical storm warning was lifted on Wednesday morning, Jamaica faces significant recovery efforts. Much of its infrastructure was destroyed, and 77 percent of the island was without electricity, according to local news reports. (Andrew Holness via Storyful)
