Bethune-Cookman University joined a number of HBCUs nationwide in shutting down its Daytona Beach campus on Sept. 11 after receiving a potential threat.

USA TODAY reported at least three other historically Black colleges and universities were on lockdown as well: Alabama State University, Hampton University and Virginia State University.

The Daytona Beach Police Department, in a Facebook post, announced it was investigating the threat, adding: “We ask the public to avoid the area until further notice. Updates will be shared as soon as more information becomes available.”

Authorities working the threat requested a bomb dog to help in their investigation. Emergency personnel including ambulances and fire engines were staged at Joe Harris Park on Pearl Street.

B-CU issued this statement:

Due to a potential threat to campus safety, as a precaution, Bethune-Cookman University is currently on lockdown.

All classes have been canceled; students should return to their dorm rooms and shelter in place. All faculty and staff should head home and those not on campus should plan to work remotely.  Safety is our first priority, and we will continue to provide updates.
