Brooke Shields claims ex-husband Andre Agassi body-shamed her with a backhanded compliment

Actress Brooke Shields has claimed that her ex-husband, tennis player Andre Agassi, once body-shamed her with a backhanded compliment.

Shields, 59, was married to the tennis star for two years, from 1997 to 1999, but their relationship ultimately ended in divorce.

She’s opening up about their relationship in her new memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old, where she shared more about her time in the modeling industry and how it gave her body image issues.

‘I was very specifically told I was not runway worthy, because I wasn’t skinny enough,’ Shields wrote in her new book, per People.

‘Being told you are “the face,” you begin to believe that’s all you are — a face. From the neck up, I was Brooke Shields, but it was like my body existed in a different reality,’ she penned.

She recalled telling Agassi about these inner thoughts and insecurities.

‘When I would profess my insecurities to my first husband, he would always say, “I wish you could see yourself the way I see you,”‘ Shields wrote.

‘However when I said, “Will you still love me if I’m big and fat?’ (I meant once I got pregnant — an unfair question for anybody to ask another person I know!) I could never have expected his response,’ she continued.

Shields claimed that Agassi had told her, ‘I love you too much to let you get big and fat!’

The Pretty Baby star admitted in the book that it was a response that she didn’t expect.

‘I definitely did not see that coming and must admit I started to spin a bit,’ Shields wrote, per the outlet.

‘But we all know how that relationship turned out,’ she added.

After Shields’ divorce from Agassi, she found love with film director Chris Henchy, who she married in 2001.

The couple share two children together, daughters Rowan, 21, and Grier, 18.

However, her first marriage isn’t the only thing that the actress is opening up about in her new memoir.

She also revealed that a doctor had performed a procedure without her consent while she underwent a labia surgery.

The mom-of-two recalled dealing with major discomfort due to the length of her labia, like chafing and bleeding, which prompted her to undergo a labia reduction.

‘Of course, it’s not covered by insurance because it’s considered cosmetic, which is very interesting,’ she wrote.

‘The last time I did check, I did not want to be a porn star,’ the celebrity quipped in the book.

When she visited her Beverly Hills surgeon for a check-up after the surgery, he ‘proudly’ told the model he threw in ‘a little twofer’ – vaginal rejuvenation.

However, she had not asked or consented to the procedure.

The Endless Love actress worried the story was ‘too graphic or simply TMI,’ but wanted to divulge her experience to potentially help other women.

‘If we are to change the way we approach and talk about women’s health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues,’ she explained.

‘Shame is no longer an option,’ she said.
