Cheltenham Festival LIVE: Latest updates, racecards and results from Day Three as as Sir Alex Ferguson wins the second race and Rachael Blackmore picks up first win of the week on Air of Entitlement

I’m very lucky to get on these horses. He was brilliant, he’s got so much speed and he was able to use it today. We went a nice gallop and he was still able to do it (from the back).

We were all going out there, everyone had the same plan, it either works riding like that. But when everyone’s committed, it makes it easy.

He’s unbeaten around here, I know one day it was fortuitious, but he has lucky on his side. He’s a very, very good horse.

What a final run! Blackmore digs in over the final hurdle neck and neck with Teahupoo and then pushes flat out to test Teahupoo, but last year’s winner can’t keep hold of the lead.

10 years old, but looking fit as a flea. His third Cheltenham win. What a ride.

It’s small ahead of the final hurdle, and Bob Olinger wants to challenge…

Nearly impeded by the faller. Crambo’s jockey Jonathan Burke is being tended to, while Crambo seems fine. Home By The Lee is running loose, but not troubling the runners, which is good.

Two hurdles to go, and its Rockys Diamond who has the briefest of lead ahead of Gowel Road.

Home By The Lee was also brought down, and the horses are running riderless for now. Home By The Lee crashes through the running rail. We may need repairs here.

Rachael Blackmore on Bob Olinger is the backmarker for now, with Teahupoo covering ground on the outside of Buddy One in the middle of the runners as they head downhill.

Gowel Road is still a feisty leader with seven to go, but Teahupoo just wobbles a little over that latest hurdle.

Teahupoo is in the front rank as they set off, with Gowel Road four lengths clear as they pop over the first hurdle.

Rockys Diamond is second, getting closer to the leader over the second, with Lucky Place a little way back on the inside and Teahupoo fifth for now.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. But if I hear a name, or see a name that’s a vibe, I will take a punt and put a bet on.

But what the ex-TOWIE star does know about, is good television. Here she is on having a flutter, and why the races is a great day out for women:

Gordon Elliott’s returning champion is looking to make it a double, but if he could, he might not prove the most popular winner (not least for the bookies).

Teahupoo has only run once this season, on December 1, with Elliott insisting that the long gaps between races suits him.

But as Ed Chamberlin noted in Mail Sport this morning, that means there’s very little to capture the public’s imagination.

Still, he’s looking lovely this afternoon. Not long to go now…

That was brilliant. That sort of distance suits him, but he never missed a beat.

I was struggling to pull him up, and even at the junction of the crowd, he started pricking his ears and shying away from them but –

I love it. Such a dream riding horses like this. I’m in a privileged position to be riding these horses.

He’s clear over the final hurdle and it’s a terrific jump, and there’s a mile between Fact To File and his closest rivals. Il Est Francais is left in the dust, what a stupendous run from the favourite.

With two fences to go, but it’s Fact To File who streaks into the front clear ahead of Il Est Francais.

The favourite is looking dangerous ahead of the last fence.

Popping over the open ditch with seven to go, but over that fence, Jungle Boogie jumps clumsily and only just avoids creating disorder.

The frontrunners are bunched up, with long shot Hang In There and Djelo some way off.

… to go past Jungle Boogie with 10 fences to go, much to the delight of the crowd.

The French horse is just ahead of his rival, with Fact To File moving forward now along with Protektorat.

The favourite sticks close to Il Est Francais in the strung-out field in fourth, while Jungle Boogie looks to get comfortable in the lead as they head for the home straight for the first time.

Heart Wood and Envoi Allen are a little further back, with Hang In There, Master Chewy, and at the back, Djelo by five lengths.

What a race this should be, and Il Est Francais gets the pack off and running. He’s likely to like the air in front of him and will lead for as long as he can.

Last year’s winner Protektorat streaks ahead, but it’s Jungle Boogie who swipes back the lead over the second hurdle.

Some extraordinary news from elsewhere in the horse world, as legendary jockey Frankie Dettori files for bankruptcy.

Il Est Francais is – no surprise – French, aiming to become only the second winner at the Festival from the country.

The horse was pipped to the post at the King George VI Chase at Christmas, but the intermediate trip in this Grade One should suit him. He’s been nicely backed – and is second-favourite at 7/2.

We’re spoilt with feature races this afternoon, with the first of these pearls the 3.20pm.

Winners down here have been few and far between for me. I was grateful when Mr Henderson rang my agent and gave me a ride on him.

Very kind of you saying that, when you’re not handed the ammunition, I’ve got a lot of stick for not coming here, but I didn’t have anything good enough. But I haven’t had a winner for a long time, so i’d best not be greedy.

I was lucky enough to meet Doddie one time. He was a great man.

That late surge brought saw him lead over the final hurdle and here he comes storming the field and uncatchable by the favourite Jeriko Du Reponet.

Named for the late great Doddie Weir, this win will go towards his foundation. A worthy winner!

With Will The Wise, Jeriko Du Reponet and Catch Him Derry, making good ground, but here comes Jeriko Du Reponent…

Third last and still some way from home, with the frontrunners still in position and favourites still buried in the field.

Catch Him Derry and Feet Of A Dancer are two that can’t find their way forward yet, while Maxi Mac Gold sticks to the front with Supreme Gift, and Karl Des Tourelles.

… as is Feet Of A Dancer, biding their time in the pack as American Sniper clings on to that lead.

Bugise Seagull struggled over the six-last, and Zain Nights has fallen back some way now.

Supreme Gift is revving up to inch forward with three hurdles to go.

With Thomas Mor, Maxi Mac Gold, and Supreme Gift, he’s really romping ahead by about three lengths.

Patter Merchant is still the backmarker as the front of the pack is lead swinging round the bend with seven hurdles to go.

A little bit of time taken, but no false start this time. American Sniper has the early lead, while Patter Merchant, at the rear, looks a little uncomfortable over the second hurdle.

I think the jumping won it. What can I say? Great horse, it was a bonus.

Winning with her last year was fantastic and doing it again this year is fantastic. Thank you very much.

With the British trainer claiming his first win of the Festival. Only Nicky Henderson (66) and Willie Mullins (108) have more, since 1988.

ITV Racing confirms that Springwell Bay, the second horse involved in that fall with Whats Up Darling, sustained a fatal injury during the accident.

Sincere condolences to his connections. A note of sadness to end on, I’m afraid.

Some exuberant celebrations in the winner’s enclosure from the former Man United manager. Which of course prompts cracks about not having had much to celebrate of late – not an hour passes with Ruben Amorim catching a stray, it seems.

Brilliant. He’s been a very difficult horse to trrain, fair play to Paul and Clifford because this horse doesn’t come without his problems. But travelled great, jumped beautifully.

He was very quick, very efficient. You watch him at the ditch at the top of the hill, he half took me on… brilliant. Couldn’t be happier.

When you don’t have the horses, it’s a long lonely week. We got a bit of stick when this horse came along because of his price tag, but he looks pretty good now.

It’s never looked in doubt with Harry Cobden looking so strong but he turns on the afterburners and streaks lengths clear to justify his expensive price.

A big win for Sir Alex Ferguson!

There’s a cluster that struggle over the third to last fence, with Caldwell Potter still looking good at that front.

More to follow on Whats Up Darling and another horse involved in the fracas.

With all the horses looking clean and strong with six fences to go. Firefox is in six, going nicely.

Es Perfecto is up to second, with Caldwell Potter not looking to give up that lead anytime soon.

Four fences to go as they move down the hill, and Firefox plots his move forward away from the running rail.

The handsome grey leads by just over a length, jumping well with 12 fences to go. OMoore Park and Es Perfecto keep closer, with Lord Of Thunder slipping down from second to fourth.

Turning from the stands, Caldwell Potter really is keeping quite an efficient pace.

After yet another false start, with Caldwell Potter leading in front, and Firefox nestled nicely in the centre of the chasing pack.

Whats Up Darling the backmarker for now.

He’s a Grade One horse coming back into a handicap. He’s in good form, he’s been schooling well at home, he loves the ground.

He’s fit and he’s well. If he gets a clear run round hopefully he’ll run a good race.

The Gordon Elliott is well-backed this afternoon, and will look to be the first to disappoint Sir Alex Ferguson today.

His Caldwell Potter, trained by Paul Nicholls, is also nicely priced at 11/2.

Delighted. She was brilliant, Rachael was brilliant on her, it’s nice to get a winner.

I thought we were struggling, and just coming to the last she lengthened, and Rachael’s done a great job.

We love having winners here. It’s so hard, but it’s great to be here.

It’s a magical place to be up here. She did it really well, she came through the race lovely, and I just want to dedicate this to my cousin Robert Blackmore. He passed away at the weekend, and his funeral is today. So I dedicate this to him.

We have had a quieter two days, walking home on Tuesday I feel like I’ve been spoilt the last couple of days. But Henry does such an incredible job here, they all run above themselves.

Sixandahalf battled manfully, but here comes Rachael Blackmore on Air of Entitlement, swooping past Diva Luna and then sticking her neck just in front to streak past the post.

The favourite is leading over Diva Luna and Air of Entitlement and it’s a huge jump to bear down on the post….

Brendas Asking still leads by a length as Karamoja plots a route forward over the penultimate hurdle.

Here comes Sixandahalf who has bided her time but looks strong now.

Hollygrove Cha Cha is proving a tricky companion for Aurora Vega, who is struggling to get past her.

Diva Luna still on Brendas Asking’s tail as they head towards the third-last.

Third place is Karamoja, and then Karoline Banbou.

… and will struggle to make up ground after a disaster start.

Brendas Asking leads over the second, trailed by Diva Luna, with Maughreen the far-off trailer, as the pack winds past the grandstand.

The Mares Novices’ Hurdle – and Day Three – is underway on the New Course.

A slightly tetchy start, after a lot of incredibly messy attempts yesterday.

… and certainly not on St Patrick’s Thursday. The Irish trainer is leading the pack with five winners at the Festival so far, with his closest competitors all tied with one apiece.

Just the seven runners in the opening race could see him start today on the right foot.

Aurora Vega, out of Quevega, who won the Mares’ Hurdle a record six times in a row, features in the opening race.

She looks exceptional, I must say. And enticing at 8/1.

Everyone dreams of it happening, but how often do horses with long odds make those dreams come true?

As Paddy Power, of Paddy Power fame, reveals that he’s made an intriguing bet with Peter Crouch.

We were going to have a bet for a pint of Guinness, but I thought to make it interesting, what about a pint for everyone in the Guinness village?

After the Stayers’ Hurdle, if an English horse wins, I’m buying the pints, and if an Irish horse wins, Crouchy’s buying the pints.

I think the word at 4.10pm will be ‘slainte’.

Marcus Townend fancies SIXANDAHALF trained by Gavin Cromwel to take the opening victory in the The Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.

The drying ground sways the decision in favour of SIXANDAHALF, a winner on the Flat at Newmarket last summer.

Her jumping was quick and accurate in a victory at Fairyhouse in January, when the re-opposing Kimi De Mai was third.

Galileo Dame, who gets an age weight allowance, also has fair Flat form. Her second in the Grade One juvenile hurdle at Leopardstown puts her bang in the hunt, although she would be more fancied on softer ground.

Maughreen and Aurora Vega hold claims but their stable’s best chance may be Karoline Banbou, who improved massively last time when winning at Fairyhouse.

Jubilee Alpha’s two wins came at the expense of Bluey and Hollygrove Cha Cha but trainer Paul Nicholls also rates stablemate Just A Rose highly.

Yesterday, Wednesday, March 12 recorded the smallest Cheltenham festival crowd since 1993, with 41,949 spectators present at the Gloucestershire racecourse.

It was drop of nealry 5,000 from the previous year.

So wear are festival goers heading instead???

Somwhere with better sun and cheaper pints.

A major reasoning for the Irish taking the lead in the Prestbury Cup yesterday was thanks to wIns from Marine National and Jazzy Matty who stormed to victory in the Champion Chase and Grand Annual respectively.

The two horses previously ridden by the hugely young jockey Michael O’Sullivan who sadly passed away this year, defied the odds to create emotional scenes at Cheltenham once again.

No more so than when O’Sullivan’s late partner Charlotte Giles was embraced by Queen Camilla as the two met on Day Two.

Speaking on Marine Nationale’s win yesterday Giles said O’Sullivan was with him ‘every step of the way’ during his Champion Chase success.

Quite fitting that the Irish hold the lead heading into St Patrick’s Day Thursday.

Following the conclusion of Day Two, the scoreboard showed as 9-5.

The Irish got quite the scare yesterday, when wins from the yards of Nicky Henderson, Rebecca Curtis, Jeremy Scott, and Lucinda Russell gave the hosts the lead heading into Day Two.

But alas normal service has resumed.

We are now up to five non-runners across the seven racescrads today, including Langer Dan and Monmiral’s exit from the Stayers’ Hurdle mentioned earlier.

It is worth keeping a close eye on the Strayer’ Hurdle throughout the day as Jack Kennedy also needs to get the clear from the doctor before he rides the favourite Teahupoo.

Grade One and Cheltenham Festival winning jockey Lizzie Kelly is back to take you through the seven races on day three.

Kelly has decided to take on heavy favourite Fact To File in the Ryanair but has she stuck with the well-backed Teahupoo in the feature?

You’ll have to watch to find out…

Although Sir Alex Ferguson’s Cheltenham winner from last year, Monmiral, was declared a non-runner for the Stayers’ Hurdle, the legendary Man United boss has the opportunity to claim three wins in the West Country this afternoon.

The first comes in the Jack Richards Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, Caldwell Potter, before Protektorat looks to retain the Ryanair Chase at 3.20pm, and Il Ridoto features in the Plate Handicap Chase.

But this isn’t Ferguson’s first trip to Prestbury Park this year – watch how he was sought out by grateful fans yesterday…

Stop right there – don’t even think about making your selections for Day Three without having a pick of the collective brains of Mail Sport’s crack tipsters.

Willie Mullins and JP McManus – there hardly seems a more Cheltenham combination of owner and trainer going. And today’s pick of the bunch from the dream team is Ryanair Chase favourite Fact To File.

The eight-year-old won the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase last year – and looks hotly tipped to make the step up today.

On that subject, Thursday is not without the chance for a similar narrative, as O’Sullivan’s brother Alan is set to make his Cheltenham debut in the Kim Muir with Walking On Air.

The eight-year-old has been well backed on Paddy Power, with the odds 9/2 before the start of raceday.

Alan was at the Festival at the start of the week, alongside O’Sullivan’s girlfriend Charlotte Giles, to watch the curtain-raiser, named in his late brother’s honour.

Wednesday afternoon saw a hugely special moment as two of the late Michael O’Sullivan’s former rides – Marine Nationale and Jazzy Matty – claimed back-to-back winners less than one month after the jockey’s tragic death.

The Gordon Elliott-trained horse was pulled up during the Cross Country Chase and was later assessed by course vets. The good news at the time was that he had walked into the ambulance from the course – but now there’s a better one from County Meath.

A real shame for a Cheltenham crowd favourite, but as trainer Dan Skelton explains, the yard had no choice but to look out for his best interests.

He had a slightly dirty nose and we had the vet look at him. There’s a bit of mucus in his track wash, which is a test of his airway, and unfortunately there’s too much.

He’s going to have to not run today. It’s very disappointing that we can’t go there, he’s a horse that’s turned up every year since he was four years. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get to go and perform today.

He should go to Aintree. This shouldn’t take long to clear up – it’s just bad timing.

It was a beautiful morning for those out on the gallops at sun-up this morning, in marked contrast to yesterday’s altogether more wintry scene.

But that’s not to say we’re in for a totally serene day – there’s the threat of scattered showers around 2pm and more drizzle towards the end of the day.

However, Clerk of the Course Jon Pullin informs us that there’s no change in the going yet: it’s good to soft.

Thursday also sees us spoilt for choice, with not one, but two feature races to keep an eye on amid a sea of competitive action.
