STORY: China has stepped up checks on imports of U.S. chips, including those made by Nvidia. That’s according to a report by the Financial Times on Friday. It cites sources saying customs officials have been dispatched to major ports to conduct strict inspections. The move comes as Beijing sharpens its focus on promoting home-grown semiconductors.According to the FT, the checks initially focused on Nvidia chips meant to comply with U.S. curbs on exports to China. But it says they’ve since been widened to cover all advanced semiconductor products that could breach those curbs.China’s access to Nvidia’s world-leading chips has been a major source of tension between Washington and Beijing. The FT says at least $1 billion of the firm’s advanced silicon was smuggled into the country over the three months from May.That contrasts with reportedly lukewarm demand for a chip design that Nvidia is allowed to sell there. While Huawei and other local companies have made progress in recent years, Reuters sources at Chinese tech firms say the U.S. chips are still considered to perform better. In August, Donald Trump floated the possibility of allowing Nvidia to sell its most advanced products in China again, but there has been no word since on an official change of policy.
