Hundreds of Delta passengers experienced significant delays on Thursday night after two international flights were diverted to Montgomery, Alabama, due to severe weather.

Flying to Atlanta, Flights 1828 from Cabo San Lucas and Flight 599 from Mexico City were forced to land in Montgomery around 10:30 p.m. and 10:20 p.m. This was because of severe weather that caused lightning and wind.

The unexpected diversion, affecting a total of 297 passengers, led to a lengthy tarmac delay.

The airline cited lack of Customs and Border Protection personnel at Montgomery Regional Airport, which prevented passengers from getting off the plane for several hours.

“We fell short of how we aspire to serve and care for our customers amid thunderstorms in the Southeast U.S. Thursday evening,” a Delta spokesperson said. “We are reaching out to each customer with a full refund of their booking.”

Delta is providing full refunds to all affected passengers and a thorough review of the incident is underway to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
