Elon Musk announced Thursday that he plans to bring Vine back to life, but ‘in AI form.’
Originally launched in 2012, Vine allowed users to share six-second looping videos.
The platform was acquired a year later by Twitter under Jack Dorsey’s leadership and remained active until its shutdown in 2017.
Musk shared the news on X with few details, suggesting that all content would be AI-generated.
The post has thousands of comments, many applauding the billionaire for the move.
‘AI + short-form video = future of content,’ one X user commented.
Others suggested the move would not only take TikTok, but also replace human influencers.
However, Musk has suggested reviving Vine multiple times since purchasing Twitter in 2022 for $40 billion. On October 30, 2022, he posted a poll asking users if Vine should return, with 69 percent voting ‘Yes.’
Elon Musk announced Thursday that X will be bringing back Vine, which launched in 2013
Vine was originally a standalone app used by 200 million active users.
It saw the birth of many stars, including singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes, professional boxer Jake Paul and actor Andrew King Bachelor.
The Dorsey-owned Twitter bought Vine for a reported $30 million, allowing users to share Vine content with their followers.
Vine was shut down on January 17, 2017 due to internal struggles, including pay for creators and a lack of investments.
When Musk first suggested bringing back Vine, Mr Beast quickly chimed in saying: ‘If you did that and actually competed with TikTok that’d be hilarious.’
Musk asked how to make it better than the Chinese-owned app, to which the YouTube star replied: ‘No one is original anymore, whatever you do will be on every other platform the next month unless it has a deep moat.
‘YouTube has shorts, Instagram has reels, Reddit, Snapchat, Facebook, etc. all copied TT.’
Mr Beast added that Musk needed to revamp Vine in a way that would be impossible to copy.

In 2023, Musk again posted: ‘No question that we need to bring back an even better version of vine.
And a year later, the billionaire replied to a post about brining the video-sharing app back, saying: ‘We’re looking into it.’
