It’s no longer just about skincare for the face – now, it’s all about body care products that promise to prevent skin conditions and tout anti-aging properties.
To find out if these products actually work, and who benefits from them most, FEMAIL reached out to skincare experts.
Whether it’s Vitamin C body serums or body lotions aimed at aging skin, is it no longer enough to simply wash with simple soap and water?
Dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp, based in New York, told DailyMail.com, ‘Just the basics, such as a gentle body cleanser and moisturizer, are often sufficient for maintaining the health of your skin.’
However, if you’re dealing with certain issues like keratosis pilaris or acne, Dr. Camp quickly clarified these products can be beneficial and effective.
‘Products designed to address specific concerns or conditions can play an important role in your skincare routine,’ Dr. Camp, at MDCS Dermatology: Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, explained.
Dr. Camp recommended these products for ‘people with specific skin conditions, namely eczema, psoriasis, acne, dry, or sensitive skin,’ as long as they were selective.
He suggested looking for particular ingredients to address concerns – for example, if you’re dealing with body acne, look for salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

Double board-certified dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp told FEMAIL, ‘Products designed to address specific concerns or conditions can play an important role in your skincare routine’
Dr. Camp explained that salicylic acid works as a gentle exfoliant and helps to remove oil from clogged pores.
‘Benzoyl peroxide has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that target causes of acne,’ Dr. Camp explained.
‘Eczema-prone skin responds well to ingredients that help maintain the integrity of the skin barrier, such as ceramides, Shea butter, aloe, and glycerin,’ Dr. Camp added.
‘On the converse, avoid products that contain fragrances or dyes.’
‘Keratosis pilaris, or the rough and bumpy skin often found on the upper arms and thighs, can be addressed with ingredients that have keratolytic properties… like glycolic acid and lactic acid, [which] help break apart the bonds of dead skin cells and soften skin.’
If your major concern is anti-aging, Dr. Camp advised looking for hyaluronic acid to help skin retain moisture and minimize the appearance of fine lines, niacinamide to calm inflammation.
Dr. Anna Persaud, CEO of skincare brand This Works, told FEMAIL, ‘The skin on your body works hard every single day, protecting you from environmental stressors, pollutants, and dehydration.’
Dr. Persaud, who has her PhD in biochemistry, believes that ‘the skin on your body deserves the same love you show your face.’

Body care can target different parts of your figure for the best results, like rescue balm specifically made for cracked and dry heels
While Dr. Persaud believes body care is beneficial for everyone, she thinks certain people can benefit even more, whether it’s using it as a self care opportunity or because they face environmental factors.
‘Individuals who face daily external challenges such as UV exposure or environmental pollutants will find that nourishing and protective formulas can make a significant difference in restoring comfort and vitality to their skin,’ Dr. Persaud, based in England, said.
Body care can target different parts of your figure for the best results, especially when it comes to anti-aging.
For example, Dr. Persaud explained, ‘You’ll find the skin on your chest is more delicate than on your arms.’
Whether you’re hoping for younger looking cleavage or to combat back acne, it might be time to swap out your simple soap and water.
