A brown bear said to be the first to ever have brain surgery in the UK has had a “remarkable recovery” after emerging from hibernation, a wildlife reserve in Herne, England, said.
Boki, a three-year-old brown bear, had been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition characterised by excess fluid in the brain, which was causing him to suffer from seizures, Wildwood Trust said.
After determining that the young bear would be unlikely to make it through winter without urgent intervention, Wildlife Trust concluded that life-saving surgery was required as he prepared to go into torpor, a state of semi-hibernation.
Boki underwent surgery in October 2024, with a stent fitted between his brain and abdomen to help him pass the excess fluid. The Wildwood Trust said that he has since made a “remarkable recovery,” after recently emerging from his hibernation.
This footage by Wildwood Trust shows Boki playing in his enclosure.
