Buc-ee’s is one step closer to becoming a reality on the Treasure Coast.

The state has signed off on a key aspect of the project, St. Lucie County Commissioner Larry Leet said April 8.

The next step to beginning construction is approving the final site plan. Once approved, Buc-ee’s construction typically takes 12-15 months from start to doors opening, company officials have said. That could put an opening sometime in 2026.

Here’s what to know about Buc-ee’s.

What is Buc-ee’s?

The Texas-based chain operates 51 locations in nine states — Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennesee and Texas.

It is a megasized gas station chain that started in Texas in 1982.

How many Buc-ee’s are in Florida?

Florida has two Buc-ee’s, one in Daytona Beach and one in St. Augustine.

The first opened in St. Augustine on Feb. 22, 2021. The second in Daytona Beach opened on March 22, 2021.

The Daytona Beach Buc-ee’s has a 53,000-square-foot convenience store, slightly bigger than the 52,600-square-foot location in St. Augustine, and about the average size of a Publix store.

An Ocala location has been in the works to become the third location. In February, Buc-ee’s submitted paperwork to bring a travel center to Tallahassee and the St. Lucie County location is awaiting final site plan approval.

What is so special about Buc-ee’s?

Buc-ee’s has amassed a cult-like following among visitors who make it a point to stop at Buc-ee’s during a road trip. From clean bathrooms to fresh brisket sandwiches to Buc-ee’s merchandise, the gas station has a lot to offer.

It’s known for its large locations offering products such as home decor, clothing, grilling items, beef jerky, fudge, brisket sandwiches, candied nuts and store-brand snack products like beaver nuggets. Buc-ee’s also is known for its clean bathrooms, cheap gas and car washes.

Where is Buc-ee’s going to be in St. Lucie County?

St. Lucie County continues to review development proposals for the southeast side of Interstate 95 and Indrio Road. The upper left area in black would include a Buc-ee’s and potentially a hotel, restaurant and bank, while the rest of the area could include more than 2,500 homes and about 960,000 square feet of commercial property, county records show.

The planned location for the St. Lucie County Buc-ee’s is at the southeast quadrant of the Indrio/I-95. That puts it northwest of Fort Pierce and southwest of Vero Beach. It is be the first interstate exit south of Indian River County.

The site plan shows the Buc-ee’s with the following specs:

  • 76,245-square-foot retail store

  • 778 parking spaces

    • 611 standard parking spots

    • 19 disabled-accessible parking spots

  • 18 charging spaces for electric vehicles
