Earlier on Monday, Duterte stated in Hong Kong that he was prepared for a possible arrest.
The war on drugs was the cornerstone of Duterte’s campaign, which propelled him to power in 2016 as a tough, crime-fighting mayor. He followed through on his promises made during fiery speeches to eliminate thousands of narcotics dealers.
On Monday, the office of the current President, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., stated that no official communication had been received from Interpol yet, but suggested that Duterte could potentially be handed over, Reuters reported.
During a congressional hearing last year regarding his drug crackdown, Duterte stated that he was not afraid of the ICC and urged it to “hurry up” with its investigation.
The outspoken Duterte had withdrawn the Philippines from the ICC’s founding treaty in 2019 when the court began investigating allegations of widespread extrajudicial killings.
Recently, however, the Philippines has indicated a willingness to cooperate with the investigation in certain areas.
