The King has revealed how he stays fighting fit with a surprisingly rigorous exercise regimen as he turns 77.

Charles, who celebrated his birthday at Cyfarthfa Castle in Merthyr Tydfil on Friday, took part in a series of engagements in Wales alongside his wife, Queen Camilla.

During the visit, the couple were greeted by a slew of Welsh stars, including Gavin & Stacey writer Ruth Jones and Love Islander Liam Reardon, who got chatting to the King about his fitness routine.

At the event, he shared that he was due to open a gym the following week, joking that the monarch should join him for a workout.

‘If you ever fancy a little session, let me know, we’ll have a session together,’ he cheekily quipped, to which Charles laughed.

‘I try to do my exercise… twice a day,’ he replied.

Charles’s admirable efforts did not go unnoticed by the former bricklayer; he praised the royal, who is still understood to be receiving treatment for cancer, saying, ‘I can tell.’

Camilla has previously spoken about her husband’s dedication to staying active- once affectionately calling him a ‘mountain goat’ for his love of walking.

The monarch is thought to follow a rigorous 11-minute Royal Canadian Air Force exercise plan, known as 5BX, according to reports in 2023.

Designed by the RCAF, the routine consists of two minutes of light stretching, a minute of sit-ups, a minute of press-ups, a minute of back lifts, and, finally, six minutes of running on the spot.

He is also a conscious eater and reportedly only eats two meals a day, usually skipping lunch, as per a list of trivia released for his 70th birthday by Clarence House.

Though he pays close attention to his health, Charles still understands the meaning of balance and is not opposed to enjoying a treat or two, particularly on his birthday.

The King looked delighted on Friday as he celebrated his 77th birthday in style by cutting a giant cake at Cyfartha Castle, during the ‘royal-away’ day to South Wales.

A renowned workaholic, the monarch was determined that things would be ‘business as usual’ even amid the festivities.

He took great pride is slicing through the Victoria sponge and buttercream creation, fashioned in the shape of Cyfartha Castle.

Their Majesties were also joined by local celebrities, including actors Steve Speirs and Richard Harrington, TikTok creator Lewis Leigh, who all hail from Merthyr.

The King and Queen then spoke to people working with their patronages, including The King’s Trust and the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS), as well as local businesses Cocos Coffee and Candles and Enaid Wellness and the domestic violence charity, Safer Merthyr Tydfil.

The monarch was also presented with a coin to mark the Trust’s 50th anniversary next year, which was designed by King’s Trust alumna Jessica Gregorio and produced at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant.

Designer Julien, who is an ambassador for the ROS, showed the King and Queen a dress he designed for Dame Shirley Bassey and which he had brought back specially from Monte Carlo to exhibit at the castle for their visit.

Despite running over their scheduled time at the castle, they both spent time shaking hands with wellwishers who had waited up to three hours to see the royal couple.

Charles was also greeted by Huw Irranca-Davies, deputy first minister of Wales, and had a tour of the South Wales Metro Depot, a few miles north-west of Cardiff, on Friday morning.

His visit marked a ‘major milestone’ for the transport project nicknamed the ‘Welsh tube’, which is electrifying and upgrading the rail network across South Wales.

The King appeared in high spirits despite heavy rain, waving at schoolchildren as he drove the tram-train and joking that the depot staff ‘deserved a whisky’ after the official opening.
