Lubbock County Sheriff’s officials are awaiting the results of a medical examination before scheduling a ceremony for Arlo, its oldest serving police dog, who died Tuesday after a training exercise.

He was 7.

Arlo, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois, began work as a K-9 in 2021 as a drug sniffing dog for the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, died Oct. 28 after suffering a medical emergency during a training exercise.

Meanwhile, officials said community members can send condolences for Arlo to 712 Broadway, Lubbock County 79401, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

“We appreciate the outpouring of love shown to K9 Arlo from the community,” the statement reads.

Born in 2018, Arlo, a Belgian Malinois, began work as a K-9 in 2021, as a dual-purpose police dog who specialized in drug detection alongside his handler who was assigned to the Texas Anti Gang Center, the release states.

Arlo, the agency’s oldest active duty working dog, was involved in numerous narcotics operations and was expected to retire soon.

However, during a routine Oct. 28 training exercise, he suffered a medical emergency. He was rushed to an emergency veterinarian for treatment but was pronounced dead, the release states.

Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit held on Thursday a private honor walk for Arlo at his handler’s request.

Officials are awaiting results of a medical examination to determine the cause of his death after which he will be cremated and returned to his handler.
