Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) engaged in a public spat on Friday with Grok, the artificial intelligence robot that lives on Elon Musk’s X, leading her to correctly observe the bot is not human.

X users often ask Grok to perform basic fact-checking and provide additional context around others’ posts, with Greene’s being no different. When the congresswoman posted to her personal account a list of her attributes — Christian faith foremost among them — another X user asked Grok if she really can be considered a Christian.

The bot offered an evenhanded reply.

“Whether she’s ‘really’ a Christian is subjective, depending on personal and theological views. Her faith appears genuine to her, but public actions create controversy,” it said, in part.

Greene replied directly to the robot: ”[T]he judgement seat belongs to GOD, not you a non-human AI platform.”

“Grok is left leaning and continues to spread fake news and propaganda,” she went on. “When people give up their own discernment, stop seeking the truth, and depend on AI to analyze information, they will be lost.”

Another user asked Grok for a yes or no answer on whether Greene’s public comments and voting record align with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

“No,” it said.

Greene is best known for taking extreme positions on topics ranging from vaccine efficacy to immigration, and for supporting conspiracy theories such as the idea President Donald Trump won the 2020 election. She recently voted in favor of Trump’s tax bill that includes  cuts to social safety net programs Medicaid and SNAP, which help low-income Americans get health care and food.

Musk, billionaire CEO of X, formerly Twitter, and close adviser to President Donald Trump, has touted Grok as a tool for evaluating the value of information on the internet that won’t shy from “spicy” topics like other bots.

Musk has accused ChatGPT, the AI platform created by OpenAI, of being too “woke,” or left-leaning, and spoken about his wish to build trust around Grok’s answers.

The bot has made a name for itself by providing unflattering answers about Musk and publicly disagreeing with him.

Ultimately, though, Grok’s utility is tainted by its connection to Musk, who has used the social platform for his own political ends in the past.
