Melania Trump‘s response to reportedly marrying Donald Trump for money has resurfaced—and she didn’t hold back with her bold reply.

In 1999, Melania (née Knauss) spoke with ABC News correspondent Don Dahler not long after she and the business mogul went public with their romance.

During their chat, Dahler asked about the relationship between Melania, then 29, and Donald, 53. Many were suspicious about her motives at the time, considering their age gap.

“You know, the people, they don’t know me,” Melania bluntly declared. “People who talk like this, they don’t know me.”

When Dahler pointed out, “Well, you don’t see many 26-year-old supermodels on the arm of a 53-year-old car mechanic,” the model had an answer for that, too.

“You could feel very empty,” she shared. “And if somebody said, ‘You’re with the man because he’s rich and famous,’ they don’t know me.”

In 2004, Melania and Trump got engaged before marrying on Jan. 22, 2005. They welcomed their son, Barron Trump, in 2006.

He also shares three children, Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric, with his late first wife, Ivana Trump; Tiffany Trump with his second wife, Marla Maples.
