Michigan State Police will be investigating the death of an inmate at the Calhoun County Jail, according to a statement from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

A 43-year-old man was brought to the jail by Battle Creek Police at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, lodged on a charge of indecent exposure.

The man was placed in an observation holding area and routinely monitored, according to the sheriff’s office.

At about 5:30 a.m. deputies found the man unresponsive and having a medical emergency.

“Deputies and medical staff immediately initiated life-saving measures. Despite these efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased at 5:52 a.m.,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Battle Creek Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance assisted deputies and medical staff during the emergency response.

“As standard procedure, the Michigan State Police have been requested to investigate the incident independently. No further details are available at this time,” the sheriff’s office statement said.
