Munawar Faruqui in legal trouble: Supreme Court lawyer sues ‘Hafta Wasooli’ comedian for ‘insulting religion’

Munawar Faruqui, the Big Boss 17 winner, faces lawsuit in connection with his show, Hafta Vasooli. A complaint was filed against the stand-up comedian for hurting religious sentiments. A Supreme Court lawyer accused 33-year-old comedian of ‘insulting religion’ and alleged that the show promotes obscenity in her complaint filed on February 22.

Sharing a copy of her complaint on X, the Supreme Court lawyer Amita Sachdeva stated, “I have officially filed a complaint against habitual offender Munawar Faruqui, for his show “Hafta Wasooli” streamed on @JioHotstar.”

The post adds, “The complaint has been sent via email and will be physically submitted & speed-posted on Monday. If no action is taken, I will approach the Court to ensure justice prevails!” The copy of the e-mail requesting an FIR suggested that a case should be registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 196, 299, and 353, in addition to the IT Act and other applicable laws.

She mentioned four points in view of which the complaint request was made, alleging that the show streaming on OTT platform Jio Hotstar is “Promoting vulgarity, Insulting multiple religions, Violating cultural values and Polluting young minds & society.”

Calling for an immediate ban on the show, that debuted on February 14, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has also raised objections.

Taking to social media platform X, the organization’s statement said, “We demand an immediate ban on #HaftaVasooli airing on Jio Hotstar! Munawar Faruqui uses inappropriate language in this show, which is unacceptable for public viewing. It degrades moral values. Streaming platforms must act responsibly!”

Hafta Vasooli on Jio Hotstar

The show focuses on political and cultural events and presents a newsroom-style satire with sharp social commentary. In the first episode, actors Sharib Hashmi and Vivian Dsena appeared as guests. The second episode featured Saqib Saleem.

The official description to Hafta Vasooli suggests that the show is a “satirical newsroom comedy with Munawar Faruqui, packed with current events, absurdity, roasts, chaotic debates, sketches, and surprise guests!”
