A surfer has been killed by a shark at a busy beach in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
The male was brought to shore by surfers at Dee Why beach just after 10am on Saturday.
Emergency workers remain at the scene, as witnessed believe the surfer’s legs were mauled.
The beach’s shark alarm and red flag ushered bathers to shore shortly after the attack, and two pieces of a surfboard were recovered from the water.
A witness told Daily Mail they saw a group of people ‘crying in a circle’ just metres from the water.
Surf Lifesavers advised Dee Why Beach was closed until further notice soon after the shark incident.
‘Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command have closed the beach and will liaise with experts… to determine the species of shark involved,’ NSW Police said.
Initial reports suggested the victims was aged in his 50s.
A marine safety vessel could be seen scouring the waters where, normally, dozens of surfers wait for waves.

Another witness who lives nearby said she saw ‘at least four helicopters flying overhead in just 10 minutes’.
A surfer told the Daily Telegraph several board riders helped pull the man from the beach.
‘Four or five surfers pulled him out of the water and it looked like a significant part of his lower half had been attacked,’ he said.
‘They didn’t work on him when they got to the beach.’
It is understood paramedics have begun to pack away their equipment while the victim is still on scene, surrounded by other emergency services.
The last fatal shark attack in Sydney was in 2022 when a local diver was killed by a great white shark in Little Bay.
Beaches between Manly and Narrabeen remain closed on Saturday morning.
Its believed authorities are searching for the shark as for south as North Steyne beach.
