‘I should have told them:’ 911 calls describe family’s horror after Las Vegas teen accused of shooting, killing father during fight

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – 911 calls the 8 News Now Investigators obtained Wednesday reveal the horrifying moments after a man’s daughter called police to report that her brother killed their father in the west Las Vegas valley.

The young woman, inconsolable, begged for police to send help shortly before her mother called 911. Both said the man was bleeding – and already dead – by the time dispatchers asked them if they could render aid.

Police said Jeremy Peterson, 45, took his 15-year-old son’s electronic devices away from the teen, who then shot Peterson and killed him in their home in the 6600 block of Tampa Court near Smoke Ranch Road and Rainbow Boulevard on Saturday, December 28. Peterson was pronounced dead on the scene.

“He shot and killed my dad,” the daughter told police a dispatcher, out of breath and in a grief-stricken panic. “This isn’t real. This isn’t real. Help.”

The dispatcher asked the young woman questions about what happened and pressed for details about her brother.

“What color clothing is he wearing?” she asked.

“He wasn’t wearing a shirt,” the young woman answered. “He was just wearing jeans. I don’t know where he went. I don’t know where the gun is. He shot and killed him [Peterson],” according to the recordings.

Saying she did not want to leave her mother alone, the girl eventually went outside and told the dispatcher the teenage boy had pulled the gun on her three weeks prior. She said after a family fight, the boy got mad, punched a hole in the wall, and ran outside.

The young woman told the dispatcher that she said to her brother, “You’re going to be in so much trouble.”

She repeatedly said the teen shot her father and killed him, and expressed tremendous regret for not telling them that he had access to a weapon.

“I always thought he would kill himself but not anybody else,” she said. “He’s pulled a gun on me and I should have warned my parents. I should have told them. I should have told them.”

The girl’s mother, in her nearly simultaneous call to 911, repeatedly cried “Jesus” as she tried to explain what happened.

“Jesus, I cannot believe this is happening,” the woman said.

She continued, saying she thought her son was wearing pajama pants when he ran from the family home. She repeated, “We had an argument, we had an argument.”

She also said, “He’s not breathing. He’s not breathing.”

Neighbors, who also called police, told 911 dispatchers the teen had run through their yards. One said the teen had banged on their sliding glass door.

“He’s running from the cops,” one neighbor said on the recording, adding that she saw the police K9 unit outside of her home.

The teen was eventually found – and arrested – in the 5500 block of Balzar Avenue near Smoke Ranch and Decatur Boulevard. After his arrest, the 15-year-old was booked into a juvenile detention center and charged with open murder.

Friends, family, and members of the community will gather to celebrate his life and pay their respects at a Service of Songs to be held on Friday at the Apostolic Church of Las Vegas. The service will begin at 5:00 p.m.
