President Donald Trump is reflecting on the late Robert Redford’s Hollywood career after hearing the news of his death.

“Robert Redford was great; he had a series of years where there was nobody better,” Trump told journalists Tuesday while leaving the White House for his visit to the U.K.

After a reporter told the president that Redford had died in his sleep Tuesday, Trump replied, “That’s a good way to go, I guess.”

Despite praising the two-time Oscar winner’s body of work, Trump avoided naming his favorite Redford film.

“Well, you have a lot of them … I’d say he made seven or eight great movies, they were really great. There was a period of time when he was the hottest,” he responded. “I thought he was great.”

Trump did not address Redford’s previous criticism of him.

Redford, a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party who was known for being vocal about his views on American politics, publicly denounced Trump on multiple occasions.

The actor slammed Trump as someone who “degrades everything he touches” in a 2019 op-ed for The Washington Post.

“It is painfully clear we have a president who degrades everything he touches, a person who does not understand (or care?) that his duty is to defend our democracy,” the director wrote.

In a separate 2019 NBC News op-ed, Redford declared that America is facing a “dictator-like attack” by Trump.

Redford later argued that the country has “lost its place as a world leader” during Trump’s presidency while endorsing Joe Biden for president in a 2020 column for CNN.

Redford, known for his starring roles in films such as “The Candidate” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” died in his Utah home on Tuesday. He was 89.

“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah ― the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Cindi Berger, chief executive of the public relations firm Rogers & Cowan PMK, told HuffPost. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”
