James Watson (97), the Nobel laureate American biologist and co-discoverer of the double-helix shape of DNA, passed away on Friday.

Watson breathed his last on Thursday in hospice care on Long Island in New York

The news was confirmed by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where he was based for much of his career.

Citing his son, Duncan, the New York Times said Watson had been transferred to a hospice this week from a hospital where he had been treated for an infection.
